As Hurricane Irma weakened into a tropical depression, the IRS said it is providing tax relief to people affected by the massive storm in parts of Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands (IR-2017-150). The relief applies to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as qualifying.

The Internal Revenue Service is cautioning a variety of organizations that the W-2 phishing email scam is now spreading to more organizations beyond corporate America, with schools, restaurants, hospitals and tribal groups now being targeted by cybercriminals.

The Internal Revenue Service, along with state tax authorities and the tax preparation industry, are cautioning businesses to beware of an email phishing scam using a corporate officer’s name asking for employee W-2 forms from payroll and human resources departments at companies.

The IRS said Wednesday it has been hearing complaints this week the email scam is making its way across the country for a second time. 


Better Business Bureau warns of QuickBooks phishing scam

The Better Business Bureau Northwest is sounding the alarm about a new email phishing scam targeting users of Intuit’s QuickBooks accounting software.

Victims receive an email in their inbox with the subject line, “QuickBooks Support: Change Request.” The email claims to be a confirmation from Intuit that a business has changed its name and contains a hyperlink that the recipient can click on to cancel the request.
