Telephone scammers may target students and parents during the back-to-school season and demand payments for such non-existent taxes as the “Federal Student Tax,” the IRS has warned.

IRS impersonators may call students and demand that money be wired immediately to pay a fake federal student tax, according to the Service. As in other similar scams, if the taxpayer doesn’t comply, the scammer becomes aggressive and threatens to report the student to the police to be arrested.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board released its long-awaited accounting standards update for not-for-profit financial reporting, albeit with scaled back ambitions to keep the standards for nonprofit organizations aligned with standards for businesses.

The update aims to improve how a nonprofit organization classifies its net assets and provides information in its financial statements and notes about its financial performance, cash flow and liquidity.

The Internal Revenue Service is seeing a big increase this summer in automated phone calls from con artists pretending to work for the IRS calling innocent taxpayers demanding overdue taxes.

The criminals leave urgent callback requests on voice mail telling taxpayers to call back to settle their “tax bill.” The bogus calls generally purport to be the last warning before the IRS takes legal action against unsuspecting taxpayers.
